What is Reflexology?
A Reflexology treatment involves the application of gentle, rhythmic pressure to the feet. This gentle yet powerful therapy may bring relief from a wide range of both acute and chronic conditions. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that relate to all the organs and systems of the body.
Reflexology has been shown to be effective for:
- Reducing stress and inducing relaxation.
- Improving the circulation of both blood and lymph
- Supporting de-toxification.
- Revitalising energy.
- Strengthening the Immune System
- Reducing inflammation and congestion.
- Reducing symptoms associated with IBS and PMT
- Reducing pain.
- Promoting healthy sleeping patterns.
- Assist with the management of side-effects for people undergoing treatment for cancer and other illnesses.
What can I expect from a Reflexology treatment?
A reflexology session begins with a brief run through of your health history. You will have a chance to ask any questions you may have, and to describe what you would like to gain from the treatment. During this consultation you can choose to soak your feet in warm salty water (this helps the muscles of the feet relax in preparation for the treatment and begins the detoxification process). You then lie down in a comfortable position on the plinth, with your shoes and socks removed.
The reflexology session itself lasts approximately 50 minutes. This is a time for you to close your eyes and just relax, receive and enjoy. Feedback during the session is welcome, and you can request that I use a firmer or gentler pressure at any time. If you fall asleep during the session, you will still receive the benefits of the treatment. I use talcum powder on the feet during the reflexology session, and at the end of the session I massage the feet using a blend of nourishing essential oils.
What is the focus of the session?
Each reflexology session covers the entire foot in detail. However, if you have a specific condition that you would like support with, I will focus on the reflexes relating to it.
If I discover congestion, tightness or tenderness during the session, I will focus on bringing this area back into balance.
What will I experience during the session?
There is something incredibly reassuring about having so much caring attention placed on our feet, and so people often experience a sense of being nourished both physically and emotionally by the experience. Many people experience a “lightness” or tingling in the body, as well as feelings of warmth, a sense of “opening”, or of energy moving up from the feet to the specific body area or organ they are working on.
How many sessions are needed?
The number of sessions needed is determined by the client’s health and reasons for seeking reflexology. In general, results from reflexology are often subtle and are cumulative. So you are more likely to see greater benefits from regular sessions (for example, once a week for six weeks) than if you had a session once every six months. If you are dealing with a specific illness or condition, you would benefit from more frequent sessions.
